Borage Seed Oil (Borago Officinalis)

Borage Seed Oil (Borago Officinalis)

Borage Oil, also known as Starflower Oil due to it’s beautiful purple flowers, is another must have for anyone with dry skin.

This Oil is high in Omega 6 Fatty Acid and, as far as we know, the highest source of Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) of all natural carrier oils.

Your body naturally converts GLA’s into Prostaglandin E1 (PGE 1) which your body then uses like a hormone to reduce skin inflammation. That’s very cool! Amazing stuff for the effective treatment of dry, damaged and inflamed skin.

Find Borage Oil in our:

  • ‘The Works’ Collagen Boosting Tamanu Face and Body Balm
  • Ultra Restore Hemp Balm

Candelilla Wax (Euphorbia Cerifera)

Candelilla Wax (Euphorbia Cerifera)

Derived from the small Candelilla shrub, the wax is boiled from the leaves of the plants to make a hard wax which we expertly blend with carrier oils and butters to make our amazing skincare balms. We love this Vegan alternative to Beeswax as it acts as a skin conditioner; high in nutrients that moisturises the skin and helps to prevent moisture loss. Essential in the management of dry skin conditions such as eczema.

Cetearyl Alcohol / Cetyl Alcohol

Cetearyl Alcohol / Cetyl Alcohol

Look at any natural moisturiser that contains water, you’ll likely find these two ingredients. The reason is they serve a chemical purpose, while being natural, super gentle and benefit your skin too.

Don’t be put off by the term alcohol, alcohol isn’t always Ethanol or the stuff you rub into your hands to kill germs.

Cetyl Alcohol and Cetearyl Alcohol are derived from vegetable fats (ours come from coconut by the way) and are known as ‘Fatty Alcohols’ which have the raw appearance of a solid white wax.

These fatty alcohols serve two purposes. Firstly, as a natural emollient which forms a light and breathable protective layer on the surface of the skin to prevent moisture loss and nourish skin. Secondly, to emulsify water and oils together.

Coco-Caprylate & Coco-Glucoside

Coco-Caprylate & Coco-Glucoside

Coco-Caprylate, as the name might suggest, is coconut derived hydrating emollient that helps to soften and smooth skin, while preventing moisture loss.

Coco-Caprylate also helps to ensure the cream is not weighed down by the intense plant oils by ensuring a light-weight, but luxurious feel without the need to reduce the amount of skin healing oils or increase the water content.

Coco-Glucoside is a wonderful natural alternatives to Sodium Lauryl Sulphate that is coconut derived. It shares many of the properties of raw coconut oil while encouraging water and oil to combine and form a stable emulsion – essential in water-based moisturisers.

Unlike SLS, Coco-glucosides do not dry skin out after application, instead ensuring water-based formulations are non-greasy and have that silky feel, without the needs to reduce natural actives and increase water content.

Coconut Oil (Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride)

Coconut Oil (Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride)

A superstar amongst skincare oils with well documented benefits to your skin.

Naturally Happy Skin love the light weight properties of fractionated coconut oil as it’s easily absorbed into the skin without blocking pores unlike raw coconut oil. Don’t worry, the process of fractionation ensures the oil continues to deliver magnesium, phosphorus and vitamins A, B and E directly to your skin along with excellent emollient properties that help to restore damaged skin.

An all round skin A-lister that works hard for your skin, Naturally Happy Skin use coconut oil in our:

  • ‘The Works’ Collagen Boosting Tamanu Face & Body Balm
  • ‘Skin So Soft’ Rosehip Body Butter
  • Ultra Restore Hemp Balm

EcoSilk (Isoamyl Laurate, Isoamyl Cocoate)

EcoSilk (Isoamyl Laurate, Isoamyl Cocoate)

Ecosilk is a wonderful natural emollient derived from sugarbeet and coconut. 100% natural origin and 100% biodegradable.

Ecosilk contributes to that luxurious feel in our body butters, helps to soften skin, prevent moisture loss, and leave a light, non greasy feeling after application.

Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera Biennis Oil)

Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera Biennis Oil)

The wonderful oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the Evening Primrose plant. Naturally Happy Skin use UK produced Evening Primrose in our Sensitive Skin Recovery hand & Body Cream and it’s brilliant stuff.

Another Oil that is full of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) that help to maintain healthy skin cell development, in turn, facilitating healing and skin repair. A natural source of Stearic Acid, a compound found to occur naturally in skin, Evening Primrose Oil will soften tough or dry skin, particularly given it’s high Omega 9 Oleic Acids that also serve to increase radiance and skin suppleness.

A true superhero for sensitive skin, Evening Primrose Oil moisturises and enhances skin elasticity, promoting a healthy glow that is just as great for mature skin.

Glycerine

Glycerine

Brilliant stuff, even if it sounds a bit scary. Glycerine is a humectant that is present in all natural oils and fats and even humans. Humectant literally means preserving moisture, and when used at the right concentrations (ours is – obviously), can support the natural balance of moisture in skin, drawing in moisture where needed without preventing the skin’s ability to breathe.

Glycerine has skin conditioning and restoring properties, helping you achieve that healthy skin look. It’s present is most moisturising products that contain water because it’s so good.

Organic Aloe Leaf Extract (Aloe Barbadensis)

Organic Aloe Leaf Extract (Aloe Barbadensis)

Aloe Vera is famous for its skin soothing and healing properties. It offers a variety of benefits to skin, including hydration, anti-inflammatory benefits and creating a protective barrier on the skin, preventing moisture loss. Studies have also shown that Aloe Vera has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, something really important when dealing with the damaged skin of eczema sufferers. Aloe Vera is known to be particularly effective in treating other skin conditions, including psoriasis, skin burns, minor wounds, and skin rashes.

Direct application of pure Aloe Vera gel can cause minor irritation as it dries on the skin, leaving a slightly tacky feel that can irritate sensitive skin. For this reason, we would always recommend using a moisturiser that combines natural oils, water, AND aloe to help the aloe absorb into skin and work it’s magic.

Naturally Happy Skin use Organic Aloe Leaf Extract in our Sensitive Skin Hand & Body Cream to tooth and restore damaged and irritable skin. It’s exceptionally good stuff!

Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin

Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin

Phenoxyethanol is a preservative found to naturally occur in green tea and chicory and is widely used by the cosmetics industry to preserve water-based formulations, prevent bacterial growth and protect against harmful pathogens.

A nature identical product, we use Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin due to the requirement to use such a low amount, it does not damage or reduce the effectiveness of some of the more delicate natural oils.

Research has shown this is one of the gentlest preservatives with a much lower risk of sensitisation than other preservatives, partially due to the need to use so little of it.

However, as with ALL skincare products, always do a patch test to ensure your skin is happy with it.

Phytic Acid

Phytic Acid

Derived from grains, legumes and rice, Phytic Acid is a wonderous Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA). Its particularly effective in treating dry and damaged skin due to its natural ability to facilitate the natural exfoliation process of skin – shedding damaged skin cells and supporting healthy skin growth.

However, unlike it’s friends Salicylic or Glycolic Acids, Phytic Acid is exceptionally gentle and is safe to use on super sensitive skin and has exceptional anti-oxidant properties and helps to neutralise free radical damage.

Rice Bran Wax (Oriza Sativa)

Rice Bran Wax (Oriza Sativa)

We all love rice right? This wax is a by product of Rice Bran Oil production and is derived from the rice husks. It has, in itself, a long chain of those wonderful fatty acids and is also rich in Squalane, a source of antioxidants with moisturising properties. Another fab cruelty free and entirely vegan alternative to beeswax.

We use Rice Bran Wax in:
